M1 Junction 16 to 19 Remedial Works – Traffic Management Installation

Work to stabilise embankments at four locations along the M1 in Northamptonshire will begin soon.

Last year, work to more than double places to stop in an emergency along this section of the M1 was completed. Following a post-construction geotechnical investigation, it was identified that embankments at four of the new emergency areas require remedial works to strengthen them and ensure their long-term functionality. Three of these emergency areas are located on the southbound carriageway, and one on the northbound carriageway of the M1 between junctions 16 and 19.

We’ll install temporary traffic management on the M1 Southbound between junctions 19 (Catthorpe Interchange) and 16 (Kislingbury Interchange) & Northbound between 16 (Kislingbury Interchange) and 17 (M45) we expect to start work on Monday 8 June 2026, with all work currently scheduled to be complete in August 2026.

Around each area where work is taking place, the left-hand lane will be closed, and a maximum 50mph speed limit will be in place as a precaution while works are underway.

Stopped Vehicle Detection technology will continue to operate during the roadworks, except in the immediate vicinity of the four emergency areas being worked on, where it will temporarily be switched off.

All existing emergency areas not effected will remain open wherever possible throughout construction. A free recovery service will be in place throughout the roadworks

To install this temporary traffic management, we need to close certain slip roads overnight from 9pm to 6am on 8 and 9 June 2026. Please see the below table for more information.

Closure(s)  Date
Junction 18 southbound entry and exit slip roads

M45 southbound to M1 southbound link road

8 June 2026
Watford Gap Services northbound entry and exit slip roads  9 June 2026

Please note that all dates are subject to change due to operational requirements or adverse weather.
